Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson

Janet Damita Jo Jackson (born May 16, 1966) is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer and actress. Born in Gary, Indiana and raised in Encino, California, she is the youngest member of the Jackson family of musicians. She initially performed on stage with her family beginning at the age of seven, and later started her career as an actress with the variety television series The Jacksons. She went on to star in other television shows including Good Times, A New Kind of Family, Diff’rent Strokes, and Fame.
A member of the Jackson clan, Janet broke out with the highly successful “Control” and hasn’t looked back since. Jackson’s early career boasts two TV stints: “Good Times” (1977-79) and “Diff’rent Strokes” (1981-82). Jackson became the first artist in history to squeeze seven Billboard Top Five singles out of one album (”Rhythm Nation”). It was Janet Jackson who (inadvertently) put the term “wardrobe malfunction” into the American lexicon. In 2006, Janet Jackson released the album, “20 Y.O.” which celebrated the performer’s 20 years of hit making.
Jackson faced initial difficulties after launching her recording career in 1982, often criticized for having a limited vocal range and being yet another child from the Jackson family to become a recording artist. However, with the collaboration of record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jackson found record-breaking success, producing five consecutive number one studio albums on the Billboard 200; these include Control (1986), Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989), janet. (1993), The Velvet Rope (1997), and All for You (2001). Although critics have compared her contemporary work less favorably to that of her initial breakthroughs, the critical and commercial success of her innovative multi-platinum albums, music videos and choreography have contributed to Jackson’s successful career as an entertainer.

Metallica

Metallica
Metallica is an American heavy metal band that formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. Founded when drummer Lars Ulrich posted an advertisement in a Los Angeles newspaper, Metallica’s original line-up consisted of Ulrich, rhythm guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield, lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, and bassist Ron McGovney. McGovney and Mustaine were later ejected from the band, in favor of Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett, respectively. The ejection of Mustaine resulted in a feud between him and Metallica. In September 1986, Metallica’s tour bus skidded out of control and flipped, which resulted in Burton being crushed under the bus and killed. Jason Newsted replaced him less than two months later. Newsted left the band in 2001 and was replaced by Robert Trujillo in 2003.
This mother of all Metal bands introduced the world to the intracacies of Speed Metal and Thrash. Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine was the original lead guitarist for Metallica. Original bassist Cliff Burton died in a tour bus accident. He fell out of a window, and the bus tipped on top of him. After Cliff Burton’s death, Les Claypool of Primus tried out as bassist before Jason Newsted got the gig. Metallica is one of the few world class bands to have never released a greatest hits album.
Metallica’s early releases included fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed them as one of the “Big Four” of the thrash metal subgenre alongside Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. The band earned a growing fan base in the underground music community, and some critics say the 1986 release Master of Puppets is one of the most influential and “heavy” thrash metal albums. The band achieved substantial commercial success with its self-titled 1991 album Metallica, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Some critics and fans believed the band changed its musical direction to appeal to the mainstream audience. With the release of Load in 1996, Metallica distanced itself from earlier releases in what has been described as “an almost alternative [rock] approach”, and the band faced accusations of “selling out.”

Madonna

Madonna Louise Ciccone Ritchie (born August 16, 1958), known artistically as Madonna, is an American pop singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, actress and author. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, Madonna moved to New York City to pursue a career in ballet. After performing as a member of the pop musical groups Breakfast Club and Emmy, she began a career as a solo recording artist with the release of her self-titled debut album in 1983. Madonna has since been regarded as “one of the greatest pop acts of all time”, dubbed the “Queen of Pop” by the media.
One of pop’s most successful artists, Madonna is admired for her music as much as for her maverick personality. Madonna left college after one year and took off for New York, where she earned a spot with the Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe. In the early 1980s, Madonna was part of a New York-based pop group called the Breakfast Club. Madge is praised for her music as much as she is panned for her movies. In 2000, she was voted Worst Actress of the Century. Encyclopedia Britannica announced in June 2001 that future versions of their volumes will include an entry for Madonna.
Madonna rose to stardom, producing three consecutive number one studio albums on the Billboard 200: Like a Virgin (1984), True Blue (1986), and Like a Prayer (1989). Though the entertainer faced negative critical publicity and modest sales on subsequent albums Erotica (1992) and Bedtime Stories (1994), she garnered critical acclaim with the release of her seventh studio album Ray of Light (1998). Madonna continued to remain in the forefront of pop music with four more consecutive number one studio albums; Music (2000) American Life (2003) Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005) and Hard Candy (2008).
