REM

R.E.M. is an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by Michael Stipe (lead vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass guitar), and Bill Berry (drums and percussion). R.E.M. was one of the first popular alternative rock bands, and gained early attention due to Buck’s ringing, arpeggiated guitar style and Stipe’s unclear vocals. R.E.M. released its first single, “Radio Free Europe”, in 1981 on the independent record label Hib-Tone. The single was followed by the Chronic Town EP in 1982, the band’s first release on I.R.S. Records. In 1983, the band released its critically acclaimed debut album Murmur, and built its reputation over the next few years through subsequent releases, constant touring, and the support of college radio. Following years of underground success, R.E.M. achieved a mainstream hit in 1987 with the single “The One I Love”. The group signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1988, and began to espouse political and environmental concerns while playing large arenas worldwide.
R.E.M.’s jangling guitars, mysterious-but-melodic vocals and DIY touring method pretty much defined 1980s indie rock. Their first single, “Radio Free Europe” (b/w “Sitting Still”), was released in July of 1981 on the Hib-Tone label. R.E.M. released one EP and five LPs on indie label IRS between 1982 and 1987, then signed with Warner Brothers in 1988. Each release won them more fans: “Document” (1987) went platinum; “Green,” their Warner’s debut, sold twice that. Drummer Bill Berry suffered a brain aneurysm on tour in ‘95; two years later, he quit the band.
By the early 1990s, when alternative rock began to experience broad mainstream success, R.E.M. was viewed as a pioneer of the genre and released its two most commercially successful albums, Out of Time (1991) and Automatic for the People (1992), which veered from the band’s established sound. R.E.M.’s 1994 Monster was a return to a more rock-oriented sound. The band began its first tour in six years to support the album; the tour was marred by medical emergencies suffered by three band members. In 1996, R.E.M. re-signed with Warner Bros. for a reported US$80 million, at the time the most expensive recording contract in history. The following year, Bill Berry left the band amicably, with Buck, Mills, and Stipe continuing as a three-piece. Through some changes in musical style, the band continued its career into the next decade with mixed critical and commercial success. In 2007, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Phil Vassar

Phil Vassar

Phil Vassar is an American country music singer-songwriter and pianist. Vassar made his debut on the American country music scene in the late 1990s, co-writing singles for several country artists, including Tim McGraw (”For a Little While”, “My Next Thirty Years”), Jo Dee Messina (”Bye, Bye”, “I’m Alright”), Collin Raye (”Little Red Rodeo”), and Alan Jackson (”Right on the Money”. In 1999, he was named by ASCAP as Country Songwriter of the Year.
Phil Vassar sings party-friendly country music with a kicked-back drawl and melodies more catchy than a box of fishing lures. Phil Vassar wrote for Tim McGraw, Jo Dee Messina, Colin Raye and Alan Jackson before singing his own saucy country pop songs. Engelbert Humperdinck, lord of the lounge crooners, discovered Phil Vassar singing in a smoky club in Nashville, Tenn. Phil was a frat rat in college. In the 80’s he was a member of the Eta Kappa chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity. Vassar once co-owned a piano bar outside Nashville, Tennessee, where he used to bartend and perform his own material.
Later that same year, Vassar was signed to Arista Nashville as a recording artist. His debut album, Phil Vassar, was released in early 2000; it produced five hit singles on the U.S. Billboard country singles charts and was certified gold in the United States. He followed it in 2002 with American Child, Shaken Not Stirred in 2004, and finally Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 in 2006 before Vassar left the label for Universal South Records. His first album for that label, Prayer of a Common Man, was released in early 2008.

He released his debut album The College Dropout in 2004, his second album Late Registration in 2005, and his third album Graduation in 2007. His first three albums have received numerous awards (including nine Grammys), critical acclaim, and commercial success. West also runs his own record label GOOD Music. West’s mascot and trademark is “Dropout Bear,” a teddy bear, which has appeared on the covers of his three albums as well as the singles cover for his songs “Stronger” and “Homecoming.”
A producer/rapper from Chicago, Kanye West has concocted numerous hits for Jay-Z, Ludacris, Talib Kweli and many others. In 2002, he released a pair of excellent mix tapes: “Get Well Soon” and “I’m Good.” Kanye’s single “Through the Wire” was recorded with his mouth wired shut, the result of a near-fatal car accident. Adept at sampling old soul records, he is one of the few artists equally embraced by both commercial and underground heads. Kanye’s official debut LP “College Dropout” was one of the most anticipated hip-hop releases of 2004.
West’s parents divorced when he was three years old, and he and his mother moved to Chicago, Illinois. He enrolled at Chicago State University but later dropped out to continue pursuing his music career. He later gained fame by producing hit singles for musical artists including Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, and Janet Jackson. West’s style of production often utilizes pitched-up vocal samples, usually from soul songs, with his own drums and instruments.
